Foodshare kicks off 2016 Convoy of Caring
Foodshare, a non-profit food bank, gets over 70 % of the food they distribute from companies inside the food industry. The Convoy of Caring is Foodshare’s way of thanking the food industry for supporting the fight against hunger in Hartford CT and Tolland CT counties. To find out how you can help the 137,000 people in this region who don’t know where their next meal is, click here.
Before the convoy was set to depart, we got to hear firsthand from the Foodshare team about hurdles they face, startling statistics about hunger, and future plans for the company. CEO James Arena-Derosa advocated for people to focus on the causes of hunger and begin to repair the issues where they start. Mr. Arena-Derosa was extremely passionate about focusing on correcting policies that contribute to making healthy food more expensive.
Katie Martin, Ph.D. spoke about the relationship between hunger and health. A study she conducted determined 58% of people that visit food pantries have members of their household with high blood pressure and 33% with diabetes. Katie is focused on driving out hunger while promoting health and believes hunger is a chronic problem and needs to be treated as such.
“Foodshare will work to end hunger as a part of the overall community effort to alleviate poverty in Greater Hartford”
